Off the housing behind the starter I have these numbers;
C140649
B24C
44022G
F21G

Off the frame under the motor I have these
C5NE 6015 (Molded)
PG153400E24 (stamped)

Under the shifter plate on the side by the brake pedal;
C5NN7DD6AG SFAR 5 K

I had the power steering pump rebuilt and I was told it was from a 1972.

does she happen to be a gasser utility with trans 540 pto?

i don't have a G on my trans chart.. guess it might be some reverser tranny though.. ( not a C is it? C=8spd )

44022g could be a model id...
if so..the 1st 4 indicates pre 4-68 date..

c is a domestic sn prefix.. and 140xxx would be mid 66

the b24c could be part of a date code indicating feb 24th afternoon shift.. but needs a preceding number.. if a 6 it would jive with the sn.. IE.. 6b24c

44022G does look like the model number. That would be a pre-4/68 as souNdguy said. The beginning, 440, tells us that the exact model would is a 4400, which is the Utility chassis version of the 3 cylinder 4000 series. It is basically the same as the regular 4000 except that it has a heavier duty non-adjustable front axle made for loader work and a couple of transmission options that the regular 4000 didn't have. The 4500 was the Industrial version in the 4000 series, and it had an even heavier duty front axle. The rest of the model number says that your 4400 came from the factory with a gasoline engine, transmission driven 540 rpm PTO and a 4x4 manual reversing transmission.

C140649 is a 1966 serial number as souNdguy as also said.

I also agree with souNdguy that B24C looks like a partial date code. B24C would be February 24, afternoon shift, but there should be a preceding digit indicating the year.

If your power steering pump has the integral reservoir, then it is the later style, and could be from 1972, but since the tractor has a 1966 serial number, it would have come with the earlier style p/s pump with the reservoir above the pump, and was probably replaced at some point with the later style.

Thanks guys! The PS pump does have a seperate resivoir setting above the pump.

I attached a couple photo's for you to look at it. I have several if you want to se anything else.

Thank you!

Nice looking tractor. It even has original looking 4400 decals.

The p/s pump with the reservoir above the pump is the "older" style and is probably original to your tractor then. They switched to the "new" style with the reservoir integrated with the pump, like the '60s and '70s automobile p/s pumps on 5/1/1970.

Thank you. I just finished a semi restore. I didn't have the facility or tools to take it down all the way. I did remove the fenders, hood, grill assembly, and panel housing the instrument panel. It had what looks like 2 paint jobs before mine but the 4400 stickers looked like they were the only ones to have been on it. The "FORD" stickers were on top of another sticker and I couldn't find anything to replace them. I ended up hand painting the FORD in black. Not the best look but ok for now. It looked like the wires had gotten real hot and burnt pretty badly after the plug mold, one of them welded itself to the gas tank! The gas tank had a terminal off of the sensor stud so made a new one and peened it on. Someone used green wire and replaced everyt wire with green. The neutral safety had been disconnected but was still good, I used a piece of aluminum to fill the gap needed to make it operable again. Making the tractor look nice again was fun. I wish I had before and after pictures! We are planning on a hay ride later this month.

Someone moved the head lights from the side to the top so I kept them there after I repainted them. They both work and there is a rear light that I have yet to mount on the left fender. Not sure if any of them are origional but the rear one has both power and ground wires apposed to the front having just the power.

Hello James , If the headlights say TRACT-O-LITE on them they are original ones , worklights usually did not say anything . When the loader is installed the headlights were moved to the bracket that is hanging on the left side on the loader vertical post but I also see the right hand side bracket is missing . Originally the loader was the same color yellow as the sheet metal is . George Braddish tractor parts should have the FORD decals you were looking for . Thanks Tony

I'll check out the lights, thank you! There was a coat of yellow paint under the last coat of blue that someone added on the loader, I wish I would have asked before putting the blue on! Dangit! Well, it has a good primer on it now! :)

I looked through George Braddish and didn't see the FORD decals to match the 4400 but did find the gear pattern decal I was looking for. Thank you for the lead to the website!

James

I'll see if I can get that other number proceeding the B24C. It is a 3 cyl gas motor and it has a 6x4 manual tranny.

That front axel on the 4500 must be a heavy one, the one under this tractor is a beefy one.

You and Sean have been a wealth of knowledge! Thank you for all your info!

I have another question now. :)

What makes the cable turn to operate the tachometer? My tach does not operate. I can turn it and make the tach operate so know there is something that is suppose to drive it on the back of the generator and it looks like it is removable but before I dive into it I thought I would ask. I put my drill on it the other day to see if it would turn all the way to the redline area and it does but makes a loud squeeling noise like it needs lubricated. Is it possible to lubricate that area with something?

Thank you!

James

Now that's odd. The model number is stamped into the transmission, so you would think that it would agree with the transmission that it was stamped into. The G at the end of the model number indicates that it is the 4x4 manual reversing transmission, yet you say that it is actually the 6x4. The last character of the model number should be a K if it has the 6x4 transmission. They are basically the same transmissions, just the 4x4 version is missing 2 forward gears to make it less expensive. Perhaps the transmission case broke at some point and a trans case from a 4x4 tractor was swapped in but the guts from the 6x4 were transplanted into the new case.

As to the tach cable, the rear of the armature shaft of the generator has a gear that drives another gear at right angles. That second gear has a nub that sticks upwards through the small housing on the back of the generator that the tach cable screws into. I haven't looked at mine in a while, but from memory (which might be foggy) I believe that the end of the inner tach cable itself has a square profile on the end and the nub sticking up from the second gear I mentioned above has a square shaped recess that the end of the tach cable goes into. The fact that your gauge moves up into the red by moving the end of the cable with your hand seems strange to me, as I think that normally you would have to spin it much faster than your hand could to get it to move appreciably up the scale.

I was not able to get it to the red line area by hand, I had to put my drill on it to spin it that fast. Both ends of the cable have a square end and you can feel them drop into the slot. I think I'll pull the end of the generator and see what is going on there. Maybe one of the gears are broken.

The tach meter itself was squeeling so I wondered if you could lubricate it?

Thanks for all your help Sean!

My tach wasn't working when I got my 4000. The needle would only go up to about 600 no matter how fast the engine was going, but the hour meter worked fine. I finally figured out that a piece of the bezel gasket had deteriorated and fallen down and gotten wedged behind the needle. I took the instrument cluster apart, removed the offending piece of gasket and put it back together and it works fine now.

If you want an idea of what the parts look like in the tach drive at the back of the generator, you should go to the new Holland parts look up web site. First, go to the main New Holland North America Agriculture web site by [u:55184c2ebb]CLICKING HERE[/u:55184c2ebb]. Then point your mouse at "Parts and Service" up near the top of the page and a little menu will pop up. Click on "Search for Parts" on the little pop-up menu and you'll be taken to the parts search web page. Then type in 4400 as your model number and click the Search button. Then click on "4400 3 CYL UTILITY TRACTOR (1/65-12/74)". Then click on "Electrical System" and then click on "11G01 GENERATOR & RELATED PARTS".

Ok, I see what parts are involved. Sounds like there a gear on the back of the generator armature that drives the proofmeter drive gear. I see the one description says "Proof meter drive not included". I'll know more when I have a chance to pull it apart, possibly tomorrow.

You've been a huge help, Sean! Thank you again!

That "Proof Meter Drive Not Included" remark is for the remanufactured generator. It's just telling you that the rebuilt genny from Ford didn't come with the proof meter drive. You can find rebuilt generators from lots of different sources these days, and some have the tach drives and some don't.

Ok, Sean, this is wierd. I was curious about the shift pattern after you mentioned the model number discrepency so checked it out. Keep in mind although I have had the tractor about 4 years the minimul use was all done while power steering was absent and it was like trying to steer a large rock. The gear pattern I am feeling feels like it has room when going to the center and right like there is a larger opening, like there is actually a place for 1st/4th and 3rd/6th. It sure doesn't feel like it is going into a different gear when i shift upward from all the way right or in the center. So, after i was playing around out on the road I actually though you may be correct, that it was actually a 4x4 but while looking over the shift pattern decals in George Braddish I do not see one with more than one reverse and there is definitly 2 reverse gears in both the high and low sides. So I am not sure if there is a 4x4 with two reverse gears or if it is actually a 6x4 that I can not get into 3rd/6th gear???? I only really have time on Friday's to mess with it so I'll have to report back when I see on Friday if I can force it into anpother gear out on the right side.

The lights don't have any real obvious literature but I didn't spend a lot of time looking.

Thanks again, folks!
James

No one seems to be making a replacement 4x4 shift pattern decal, probably because they aren't in as much demand. I've seen pictures that showed it as basically the same as the 4x6, but the extra forward gear to the right and forward that doesn't have a reverse behind it on the 6x4 is just missing, and the numbers are changed so that when it's in the low range you just have:

2 1

R2 R1

and when in the high range you have:

4 3

R4 R3

I don't have any experience with that transmission, so I don't know if the shift lever on the 4x4 is supposed to even move over to the right past where the gates are for 1/R1/3/R3.

I have been in email conversation with the Braddish's about getting the correct "FORD" decals so I'll ask if they have any resources for the shift decal as well. As long as I know that there is an actual 4x4 with 2 reverse gears I could cut a stencil and spray it on.

I can't thank you enough, Sean, for all your information, it is great to have a resource like you, and the others who contribute to this forum.
