Ford 4000

I have a Ford 4000. It ran great and sound as if it ran out of gas. Put gas in tank and started the tractor. It ran and sound as if it was flooding out. We have checked all that we know and can not get it to run. It will idle but will not take gas without spitting and poping. Sounds as if it has jumped time. Can anyone help? We have checked the timing, the carb., new plugs, points, coil and still have the problem. help.

First telll us if your have a 4 cylinder 4000 or a 3 cylinder model.
Sounds like fuel to me. And both tractors gotta have fuel to run.

As UltraDog said, welcome to the forum!
These old tractors had screens in the fuel systems, and when you ran them out
of fuel they would suck up the dirt off the bottom of the tank and plug the screens.
Once you tell us which model it is someone can tell you exactly where they are.
Usually there's one in the top of the sediment bowl, one in the tank and one
in the elbow going into the carb on the older tractors.

It is a four cylinder gas. We have rebuilt the carb also a complete tune-up.It is an early model 4000 with five speed trans.

Start with the basics.
Verify that you have a bright bluish white spark at the plugs that will jump a good 3/8".
Short or yellowish spark will not do.
Next check your fuel.
Remove the plug on the bottom of the carb and let gas wizz into a can for at least 1 full minute. It should not slow down or stop in that time.

always check spark first, as indicated.

if it has good spark.. move on to fuel.

cheoke help that spitting and sputtering?

might have some water in the sed bowl, or such a reduced flow that when you open the butterfly she's bucking and starving..

If it idle's fine, it's probably has a stuck advance mech. Or fuel starvation.

It sounds like fuel............... but check the SPARK first. I fought a problem like that on a Red Seal a number of years ago. It was a bad coil.....

I have never worked on the gas version but are the plugs in the same basic holes the injectors would be in on the 3 and 4 cylinder diesels?

Thanks to everyone for your help. Problem was the wire going from the coil to the destribitor. It had a nick on the side and was jumping fire. Thanks again for your help.

Yes, same location and same depth of holes where the spark plug washer or copper washer on an injector seats against the head.
They are different heads - gasser does not have the locations for injector studs cast in.
Valves, rocker arms and push rods are the same part #s between the two.

Good you got it running. And thanks for the update.
A lot of guys will come here and ask a question. Good folks here will give it their best but we never hear back from them.
So you never know if they got it running, it still sits neglected in the shed, they're too buisy campaigning to post an update or their widow doesn't know where to post.
Ford made some great tractors and it sounds like you have one of the better ones.
