Exhaust parts hunt

I have a 1960 gas 641. The exhaust set up was wrong when I bought it but it worked so I left it with the vertical muffler configuration it had. Now the muffler has a hole in it so I'd like to set things up right with the correct muffler horizontal near the exaust manifold like my service manual shows. I can get the muffler clamps and the straight outlet pipe locally with no problem. I want to order the right muffler and the model specific outlet Pipe support. I always check this site first but have not found these parts here or elswhere. After paying $70.00 for a gas petcock that lasted a day, the New Holland dealer is a last resort.

The front muffler support is available only from CNH, if at all (it was as recently as 4 or 5 years ago).

The muffler is available from just about any supplier of vintage tractor parts.

The "Y" shaped muffler support is the same thing on 1953-1964 Ford tractors. It bolts to the side of the front fuel tank mounting bracket. The correct Ford clamp for the exhaust pipe to muffler joint then bolts to the Y.

Did you take advantage of the 6 month New Holland warranty for the gas valve or did they sell you another brand that is not as good?
Do you want the stay with the vertical exhaust or go to horizontal?

There is a good reason the original muffler was moved out from under the hood. It was done because of the heat build-up, which causes the gasoline to boil in the gas tank. If you want your tractor to be fully functional in hot weather, you might want to keep what is there now, and just get a new muffler.

Actually, the underhood muffler waw used for years without issues (heat shield in place) prior to the introduction of federal interventinon in the fuel market.

Fuel boiling issues are a post federale issue.

Don't know the time frame of the "federal" intervention, but the fuel boiling issue was present as early as the 1960s. I think nearly all of the 600 through 900 series Fords sold new around here recieved the exhaust modification shortly after they were sold.

the muffler and manifold elbow are on ebay from many sellers.

the Y-shaped bracket for a underneath tailpipe,
or
the cast piece assembly for a vertical tailpipe
still show as being available from messicks CNH parts page

My uncle had an 860 that was the main "horse" for about 15 years. in the fall it pulled the corn chopper our after hour, day after day, week after week, sometimes in some very hot weather. I helped a little in its restoration a few years ago. One thing I did was to remove the mat of asbestos that had been wired in above the heat shield and then clean it up. We were unable to find the grill. It had been removed in an attempt to aid cooling. Boiling of the gas in the tank had been an ongoing problem back in the fifties and sixties.
