I have an opportunity to purchase a 1997 4630 with a turbo charger but have no experience with them. Tractor has low hours and sounds solid. (I do have a Ford 4830 and love it.) Any advise/recommendations or opinions would be appreciated.

The early 4630 used basically the original Ford 4000 3 cylinder diesel engine. The 3930 used a slightly small cu in engine.

Towards the end of the production of these two tractors, Ford & New Holland used the smaller sized engine in both 3930 & 4630 - the 4630's engine had a "soft" turbo to get the extra HP.

In Britain many dealers fitted after-market turbo's to 4000, 4600 & 4630 to get extra HP from a lighter weight tractor. Never heard any reports of the engines blowing up.

You are basically looking at a 3 cylinder engine tractor which has a reputation for being bomb-proof.

It'll be similar to the 4830...
I'm not sure they're as bomb proof as the older heritage like a 4000.... but it will do more work.
If it's got the shuttle transmission make sure it shifts correctly. Generally a good tractor tho.

Hi Rod,
Pardon my ignorance, but what's a 4830? I don't find it listed in Tractor Data under either Ford or NH! But then, they didn't have the 3010S listed either, just the 3010 under NH!
TIA
Dave

IIRC, an earlier mating of a 256 engine to the 3 cylinder chassis. Later ones were labeled a 5030...

Thanks for the responses. I am "negotiating" with the gent with the 4630.
4830 and the 5030 are the same mechanically, but it was designed for orchard use and is lower than the 5030. Both have 4 cyl, 256 cubic inch naturely aspirated engines. Many have been used as highway mowers.
(4830 sure beats the h#!! out my 8N mutt)

Did a li'l more digging in Tractor Data! 4830 is listed under "show all tractor brands" under Ford-New Holland. Mfg from '90 to '93
