I have ford (1972) 4000 3 cyc. Hydrolic's w/ front end loader and 3 pt. hitch skip jump when going up and cannot lift w/ load. Think my hydro. filter is plugged. Steps or other needs to look at to solve problem? How do you access filter? Possible access bye removing cover Plates on left side by PTO lever?
 
There are 2 filters for the 3 point hydraulics on your tractor. The one on the pickup side is a screen that is meant to be cleaned and re-used. The one on the return line is a round perforated metal can which is meant to be replaced. Both filters are inside the rear end of tractor. Pull hydraulic top cover to access them. The filters are not likely the cause of your symptoms though, but since you're pulling the top cover to clean/replace the filters anyway, buy a hydraulic lift repair kit, as they're fairly inexpensive and include the o-rings and gaskets necessary to stop leaks in the lift cylinder and valves, which sounds like your problem. Hopefully there's nothing worn or scratched up too bad in there that new o-rings can't fix it.
 
how is your loader plumbed? top cover valve? top cover PB plate? other?

what oil you running in the sump?

condition of the oil?
 
I don't know what you asking about loader being plumbed? Changed fluid hydo.fluid 303. Fluid extracted was milky, likely water in fluid.
 
Are you saying pulling the complete area where the controll value is and the rocker arms for three point hitch / is that what you are calling hydrolic cover?
 
so you have no ide how the loader is getting hydro pressure?

got a gnome in a cage with a hand pump?

should be fairly easy to follow the hoses and figure it out.. no?

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. You need a good helper or some sort of a hoist as it is fairly heavy.

i would recommend that you get yourself a service manual of some sort. An I&T FO-31 manual only costs around $30.00, and it covers the '65-'75 3 cylinder 2000/3000/4000 series fairly well in the simple stuff like removing the hydraulic top cover (big plate under the seat that the 3 point control valve and upper lift arms are connected to the tractor), cleaning/changing the filters and replacing the o-rings and gaskets to hopefully remedy your leak.

I'm guessing that you've never cleand the intake screen or changed the return filter for the S-O-S transmission either. That procedure is covered in the I&T manual as well, plus the routine pressure checks and band adjustments for keeping the transmission working correctly.

Although some do, a lot of fluids advertised as "303" do not meet the Ford M2C134D specification, which is what is the current spec for the rear end/hydraulics and the S-O-S transmission on your tractor. Check the label on the container. There should be a number of manufacturers and their specifications listed, and a statement that the fluid meets or exceeds those specifications. A lot of 303 fluids usually just say "good for use in older tractors", which doesn't tell you which older tractors that they're talking about, and mainly because it doesn't meet or exceed any of the current manufacturers specifications.
 
Thanks Sean. Your right on all accounts. I was trying to keep things simple. Have limited resources. Have limited assistee's but will take a stab at it.
What Hydraulic fluid would you recommend? Is common generic 303 ok?

Look on the label of whatever you're thinking about buying. It should state that it meets or exceeds the Ford/New Holland M2C134D specification. I buy the "Travellers" brand UTF at Tractor Supply. Tractor Supply sells one labelled 303 as well, but the label on that one just says "Good for most older tractors" and doesn't say that it meets any particular specification so I stay away from that one.
