Back to the 3000 and questions

Well this tractor has a power steering leak. It appears to be coming out of the vent for it an that seems like is has a check valve built in so am I going to be lucky and be able to replace that to fix it or do I need to go in and replace a seal some where??
Transmission ???? It seems to have R1, 2? 34 and 78 that do not pull well if at all. But the guy who owns it has never done any thing to it other then add some fluid when he saw it was low. So any chance that by changing the paper filter and cleaning the other filter and changing the fluid that the nonworking gears will start working???

Doing a tune up on it tomorrow to see if I can get it to start up better. Distributor cap looks like it has been on it since 1965 and rotor looks bad and the plugs are white on the ends so it needs then tune up any how

I would drain the trans, replace the paper filter and clean the screen, and then go through the pressure test and band adjustment procedures in the manual. if it's working, or trying to work, in all gears, but just not pulling strong in some, then my bet would be a band adjustment, but you want to make sure the pressure is correct first.

The SOS transmission is the one I know the least about but do have the book. Yep figure I'll start at the easy and work my way up and figure maybe the hyd pressure gauge I already have should work for testing pressure

Changing the SOS filter, oil and cleaning the suction strainer will not solve the sliippage problem but it almost certainly needs to be done anyway. A proper band adjustment may solve the slippage unless it has been allowed to slip for to long.

Cleaning the vent in the PS cover will not solve the PS leak but, again, it probably needs to be done. If the oil is overfilled or foaming it will be forced out of the vent.

Power steering is not over full but the guy has been using regular automotive type power steering fluid and not really sure if that is the correct stuff. I know in my 841 I use ATF and never had any problems. The vent on this 3000 seems to have a check valve in it of some sort and I cleaned up the steering housing area and that is the only place I find any oil coming out of and that leak is one of the reasons I have it here

Recommended fluid for the power steering in a 3000 was originally Ford M2C41A, which was also the recommended fluid for the S-O-S transmission, and that spec has been superseded by the M2C134D spec. The fluid for the manual transmissions and rear hydraulics was originally spec'd as M2C53A, which has also been superseded by M2C134D.

When we first got our 3400 - with the same old-style PS reservoir as our 3000 - it was spraying a pee stream out of the cap. Replaced the paper filter and it quit.

Has me think that maybe the leak he has on this if from using the wrong fluid in the power steering. I know I tried the hyd type oil in my 841 and found it did not work well if at all and switched back to ATf but this one is a lot newer so maybe he needs to sue the 134D

Hi, I just had my steering box apart on my '67 model 3400 with power steering. I think that vent is actually a vent for the lower part of the steering box that houses the worm, nut, and sectors. This lower part of the steering gear is not supposed to be under pressure at all. The gears down there just sit in an oil bath. Looking at my manual and thinking back to when I had it apart, I believe the only way to get oil coming out of there under pressure would be if the lower steering shaft seal failed, allowing the power steering pump to push it out. The best way to get to it that I know of is to pull the steering gear, which means pulling the fuel tank first. The part is labeled "14" on the new holland parts website exploded drawing of the steering gear. Part number is 86531349. While I had mine apart I replaced the upper seal also, using a speedi sleeve. I had a broken washer, bad needle bearings, and replaced all other seals just for good measure. Of course, I never have known how to leave well enough alone. Hope this helps.

Jetbird, I think that he was saying that it was coming out the vent for the power steering reservoir, not the steering column.

Old, is that correct? Also, is it the earlier style p/s pump with the separate reservoir up above the pump, or is it the later pump with the integrated reservoir?

The manual has a good SOS troubleshooting section. I would clean everything up, new filter and clean screen. With the screen removed slip a pencil size magnet in the hole and maneuver it around, see what comes out. New fluid, warm it up adjust the bands and check pressures in all selector positions. Post back it's operation. Good luck

On the steering column is a vent/check vale sort of thing that screws in and that is where the leak is. If I had to explain it better it looks like the common vent you see on rear axles of trucks. I cleaned up the area that the oil has messed up and then drove it around watching for an oil leak and the only place I see oil is that vent looking part and I have yet to see in in the FO-31 manual

Yep been reading the manual and now the problem of finding a gauge that will be a low pressure one so I can get the correct reading to do the checks. Some how the gauge I have the reads 0 to 5000 just will not cut it

Then you need to replace seals in steering colum.

Look at figure number 12. Part number 34 is labelled "check valve".
