JD 720 std rear wheel question ....

A friend of mine was working on a JD720 today in his shop and I was browsing the manual and a question came to mind. Why would such a large and heavy tractor have adjustable rear wheel width (by flipping the rim/hub configuration)? Would people actually use that as a row crop tractor? And would the geared spline system on the rear wheel hubs also be considered part of the width adjustment?

No, front axle width and wheel width is fixed, rear tires are 30" I believe, forget the width measurement of those.

If one wanted to center a moldboard plow behind the tractor and operate in the furrow, adjustable tread width is handy.

And being that the 720 standard shared most components, including rear axles, final drives etc with the 720 row crop, it made sense to include such features as the rack and pinion rear tread adjustment.
