I"m preparing to do some major work on my 4020 diesel (1967) in the transmission department, but also have a fuel smoking issue at speeds between slow idle and about 1500 rpm. Above 1500 rpm to WOT the exhaust runs clear like a normal engine should.
After talking to some other locals about this it"s suggested that the injectors are the likely issue. The pump was reworked about 1000 hrs ago but the injectors haven"t been replaced since probably the early 90"s or perhaps 5-7K hrs ago.
I"ve priced new from JD which run $109 each. Their reman injectors are $73.28 with exchange.
I"ve seen other after market pencil injectors in the $40 range.
I"d like to know what others think about these lesser expensive injection nozzles versus the JD new and JD reman.
This particular 4020 will see light work with a loader and perhaps pull a moldboard plow once a year and a rotary cutter probably twice a year on 10 acres.
