John deere G questions

Guys what is the going value of a G (about 1947-48) in the rough needs restore ( bad tires not running)???? thanks

I have been seeing them bringing 2200-2500 on average but have seen lower and higher $$$ as well for non runners.There are several things to consider tin work condition, correct carb, stuck or free engine? Are there parts missing or busted?? These G's keep increasing invalue

I paid $1500 for a GM 3 years ago. It's rough, bad tires, complete except for the battery box. Bad tin, cracked head, not sure what else.

I've been accumulating parts for it over the last 3 years before I really tear into it.

My son went in on it with me. He's always wanted a G, and thought it was worth it to have a Deere with the name stamped into the axle.

A few months ago I picked up a complete 1950 "G" for $1300. Straight tin, loose/running engine, rotten clutch parts, on junk tires.

I seen a G all set up for pulling go for $1850 this past weekend at auction here in eastern Minnesota. I bought 2 G's two years ago. Early pan seat (1947) complete but stuck, for $1900 & it had a flat rear cover...had it not the flat cover he would of deducted about $500. Later, I discovered head was cracked. The other one, (1948)was a basket case in pieces for $700 but the head and grills were gone & I spent over $2500 in motor & parts to get it running. Big items are....Straight sheet metal, grills, #51 carburetor, & flat heads are the desirable parts to name a few but most of the flat heads are cracked.

At least 2500 around here. And flat heads are of zero value these days. No puller wants them any more. There's alot better heads to be had now, that actually hold up, for the same or slightly more $.

I've paid 4k for an original running 1951 gw with shot tires but perfect tin and perfect running condition.. I also pained 3k for a 47/48 no tag g pulling tractor that needed rebuilt.. Good rubber and tin. To the fellow that said they watched one sell for 1800 I hope you bought it.. In my neck of the woods g's are hard to come by.. One of mine was iCal the gw the other came from South Carolina

I don't want an argument here but, which heads are you talking about better than the flat heads? If they are zero value, go try to buy one. The cheapest I know is $600 for a crack free guarantee, no valves, no nothing. Just a head. If you are talking about a Murphy's head for $1800, I was told they were made too big to flow right. Perhaps they would be a good head for a stock replacement head, but for pullers I was told they are filling them in to make them flow better is what I heard. Detweiler was suppose to be aftermarketing the flat head but I called and they aborted that mission. Who else is reproducing good heads for the G? Other than the Murphy head, this is news to me.

I bought a 51 2 years ago for $250 it had a 51 carb a good manifold the engine was free all but 1 tire was shot ( sold the good one on craigs list for $250 ) i over hauled the carberator put in new plugs threw on a set of tires and my son pulled all summer and was in the top 3 in 5500.

Yes i was referring to the Murphy head. I
believe Extreme Tractor has heads also, i know
he's got A heads. All i ever see/hear is the
problems with the flat heads & to avoid them
because its not worth it. The route now is
different pistons & rods to get the
compression up. Which is the only advantage
to a flat head. And i agree, ine glance at a
murphy manifold or head screams 'too big' to
me. Would be great at 3000 rpm. Haha

Well after all the headaches & heartaches Ive been through the last year flat head bs, cracks pinned, paying through the nose getting them fixed.... I wish now I would of just went with the Murphys head. I made my own rods & pistons when I stroked my last G anyhow. Hind sight is 20/20 I guess. I did notice once about Extreme tractor making them. Thanks for mentioning that. I wonder if they are the same as Murphys?

You forget a zero? Scrap is worth more than that. Certainly the best deal I"ve heard for a loose G that was complete. How was the tin work?
