JD 70 stuck in 6th now stuck between 6th and 4th.

Went on my own "tractor ride" Sunday afternoon. I know better than to "roll" it out of 6th and smoothly "roll" it into 4th as I slowed for the driveway, but that is what I did. Anyway, when I pulled it out of 6th the lever came out of the 5/6th notch on the selector casting but it didn't really disengage the gears. The gear shift would move partly down to the 3/4th notch. Got it back in the 5/6th notch and pulled it back out but still the samething - stuck in 6th. Got the gear shift into 3/4th notch and then back out. Now it must be stuck between 4th and 6th as it isn't going anywhere as she is diffently locked up. WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO GET THINGS LINED BACK UP??? Pull the selector "pattern" casting???? IS THERE ANY CHANCE OF GETTING IT BACK WITHOUT REMOVING THE CASTING?? Yes, I won't do the coasting "power shift" thing anymore. Thanks.

Don't feel bad... it is probably more worn parts than shifting on the go that caused this to happen.

When you have the cover up, inspect the gates for wear. If bad, they can be removed, built up with a welder and ground smooth.

The wear could also be in the socket ball for the shift lever- this is very common on the A-630 and B-530 with 6 individual gears. Replacing it would most likely save you frustration in the future.

I'll probably roasted for this, but proper speed shifting with a two-cylinder can be done with no negative results if one knows what they are doing.

I hauled forage boxes with two -cylinders for 25 years... if you tried to start from a dead stop in road gear, figure on adjusting the clutch about every 3rd load.

Keep in mind that all sorts of old trucks never had gear sycronizers! Just a skilled operator that new how and where to shift, how to double clutch, etc.
