JD 4960 issues

Looking at a JD 4960 to replace one of our planter tractors, while checking tractor over it seemed to lug the engine down while raising the 3pt arms with nothing on them, also while slow reving up throttle to full throttle and gear selector in park the tractor feels like it wants to move forward and in fact does move slightly when in neutral this is on level ground. What would cause this, easy fixes, or stay away from this tractor? Thanks

All normal things..make sure all the lights work properly, I know this seems minor but if they don"t it can cost a couple grand to get them going,,just did one...check all the speeds for operation, look at the front axle stupor and see if the pivot bolt is centered in the housing, if not it could be worn through the bushing,,just to name a few check points..

my 4960 will walk across the yard in neutral when cold. Kinda surges like one foot foreward 6 inches back repeat. It has done that since new. does it start good cold , blow-by?? Paul

I have a 1988, 4850 which is very similar that I bought new and everything that you describe, mine has done since day one. They are a very good and dependable tractor. I don't have many hours on mine as we only use it as a spare but I have seen them with 12,000 hours and never have been overhauled. I think that you would like that tractor if it has had decent care

The tractor didnt have much for blowby and dealer says it was recently engine and trans overhauled or within the last 1000hrs, it has 11,000hrs on overall. As for cold starting it was late in the day and had to call ahead to make sure that someone would be around as I was going to look at it after work and of course he had it running before i had arrived.

I just bought one last fall with 3800 hrs. havent had a chance to do much with it yet but the little i have done it has worked great. It also does all those things you noticed. Only thing i could add to what these guys have mentioned would be to check the mfwd switch and make sure it kicks it on and off. Good luck with it if you purchase it, for my operation it is close to a perfect machine, (i wouldnt mind more horsepower though lol never can have too much.)

Purchased a clean, low hour model 4960 just three years ago. When it is cold, and in park, you can see the tractor "attempting" to move forward and back. I did find this mentioned in the operator's manual. When raising the three point, especially at an idle, you can distinctly hear a difference in the noise the engine makes when the load is placed upon the hydraulic pump. I really enjoy running this tractor as the transmission is so easy to operate, the MFWD really makes the tractor perform in the field, and the engine in this tractor is in great shape. If you pull it hard, it will use 12 gallons of fuel per hour. It was dynoed recently at 225 hp and the pump seal is intact. I have no desire to turn it up any higher. I have not checked it for consumption in lighter loads. You do cover a respectable amount of ground with it no matter what you are pulling behind. I have had to replace the crankshaft dampener pulley, the water pump, and two seals on the MFWD. What I have should be good to go for quite a while now.
