630 fuel gauge

I'm working on the 630 again with a new problem now. Fuel gauge goes to full when switch is turned on. The tank is near empty. I thought before I started to mess with it it stayed on empty. What do I have going on now. Thanks for the help Denny
 
You probably have a wiring or sender problem. Usually the gauge is fine. Check by removing the sender wire from the gauge. Ground the sender terminal on the gauge and then remove the ground. One way or the other the gauge will read "full" or "empty". If it does this the gauge is OK. Then trace down either a short or bare sender wire or a faulty sender or ground to the sender. Remember that the gauge reading is determined by the resistance to ground signal sent from the sender. So you need to test the sender for this varying resistance with an ohm meter and if the sender is OK test to make sure that it is fully grounded.
 
The gauge goes to full if the sender wire is grounded, either by a short somewhere between the gauge and sender or a short in the sender itself. A short between the gauge and sender is MUCH easier and cheaper to fix. I suppose there could be a rare case of the float being stuck in the up position on the sender but that's about as rare as a snow storm in July in Lousiana. Jim
