JD A valve adjustment

I"m trying to adjust the valves on a 1941 JD A. I can"t get the clearances in spec all of them are way too tight. The adjuster is already backed all the way off. Any help appreciated. Thanks
 
Are you sure each cylinder is at top dead center on the compression stroke when you are adjusting? The engine must be rotated to top dead center on the compression stroke on each cylinder before attempting to adjust valves on that cylinder.
 
We tried to set it from TDC and they are still all tight. And we tried rotating the crank to see if we could get any movement out of the pushrods and when the valves started opening we turned it back and the clearances are still tight even with the adjusters backed off.
 
A while back you were talking about getting a 52A as a parts tractor, you didn"t rob the head off that one did you? they are thinner than the earlier heads. this would run you out of room on the rockers.
 
It's a 1949 parts tractor and the casting numbers are different. Do you think that's the problem? and is there any way to fix this if so? Thanks
 
Measure the thickness. I think they are different by 5/16" or 3/8". The earlier heads should measure about 5.42-5.44 thick.
 
So the head on the tractor off the '49 is 5.25" and the one that came off of it is 5.5". Is there anything that I can do that make it work? Please don't tell me I have to send the other one to the machine shop to be redone. Thanks for all the help
 
you can put 1/4" spacers under the rocker stands, just watch the valve cover hitting the Rockers. May have to go to a thick homemade valve cover gasket. Yee haw.
