4020 tachometer - repair or replace?

The tachometer cable was broken on my '65 4020 when I purchased it. I didn't pay much attention to it, but the tach needle was sitting at 500 rpm instead of 0. I replaced the cable and the tachometer is reading way too high, with redline readings at idle.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about checking/repairing the tach, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one?

If your's is an original I vote to repair it. The new ones are terribly quality and have other languages on the face.

Metro spedometer has done work for me before. I was satisfied with their work.

I have heard many horror stories of people buying new ones from Deere only to have them fail very quickly.
I would have yours repaired if it is an older original type.May cost more but should be better in the long run.

Make sure you lube those cables up good too. I lathered up many with neverseize and they seem to of held up.

Thanks for the advice.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might do to try and repair this myself? If not, any recommendations on who repairs gauges?

How's the quality on the eBay aftermarket tachs?

Repair it, always keep the orginal if you dont. If you sell it sometime down the road the new owner might want it. We we sold our 4000 John Deere this past year what made the sale was we had the orginal tac stuck away showing it went out with very few hrs on it. New owner had it repaired put back in and had the two added together.

I don't know they are aftermarket it looks like my 4020 still
has the original tach Steiner also tachs for 189 I've had
goodof luck with there part

Does anyone know of a good place to have a tachometer rebuilt. I have a 1964 JD 4020 synro-shift diesel, the tachometer still works but is in need of repair and some parts replaced.

Thanks for you help in advance.
