Late B head removal

My buddy Edward (with no internet)called me this morning and he will be removing the block from his 1950 B ser#265XXX and wants to know the best method for doing this. He has removed the hood/tank and water pipes etc. and has a clear working area to the engine.

I know you pull the head and remove the pistons first to get to the block... duh... but we need to tap into the experience of this forum to find the safest way to remove the block so we can get to that doggone filter case.Jethro.

Most don't even take the hood off. Just make sure you get all the bolts out & take it apart. You will have to wiggle the block just right to get it out of the frame. Keep the shims in the same places if the rods have them.

On a Late B newer than '47 the block will NOT come out untill you've removed the fan shaft & everything above it. Hood etc. I dont care WHAT the I&T book says or which way you twist it. It dont fit through the bottom.

Well he allready removed way more then needed.

There may be another option. I did this on 2 of the late madel A's. Should work all the same on B's.

I actually split the tractor and left the head and block in place. You have to block everything up good and I made a stand to hold the front up and from tipping over. Basically I just unbolted the rods and shoved the pistons ahead in the block, unbolt the block, unbolt the frame, unbolt the fanshaft so it can separate, unhook some small things and block the hood up,remove steering shaft. Then I rolled the back away enough to get in there and work. These tractors just had blown out block to main case gaskets and missing studs, but still would be a way to get into that oil filter casting. They ran fine otherwise and didn't need any engine work so I hated to go tearing them all apart.

2 cyl's by design were made to be able to remove the head and then the block WITHOUT hood or fanshaft removal. You can even leave the studs in.
I have torn apart many a late B and a few A's in my day and it can be done. I'm sure the JD B service manual would show how this is done.
A late B block goes out the top and an A out the bottom IIRC but it has been awhile.

Generator has to come off but not the fan shaft. It is best done by one person or you will be pinching each others fingers.

The ONLY way is to remove all the studs. I dont care what you say. The manual describes it also but in reality, it will not. I just went through it. Since removing every stud, in the frame is nearly impossible, & the shaft/hood/gov come off in 10 minutes, you decide. I spent a day trying to prove the manual right. I lost. Show me a video or i say your memory is either distorted OR you've never actually tried to do it. Its not even close.

LOL I held my mouth every way possible! Im NOT trying to call anyone crazy or sound abrasive but i would have to see it to believe it. Even removed the fan shaft front mount.

I've removed many heads without bothering the fan shaft. It will roll right out after you slide forward. You have to remove the generator and bracket.

I guess I missed something here. What are you trying to accomplish? Whats wrong with the oil(?) filter case?
Just a question, and I can't figure out what the goal is here.
Thanks, Jim.

Edward bought a '50 B with a crunched oil filter head and he can't get it out through the top because one of the oil lines is turning at the head instead of the connection and he cannot get two hands and one foot in there to hold one wrench while he turns the other one. Therefore, he has to take the block off to get to it from the front. Better him than me.
