jd50 clutch noise

I have a 1953 JD 50 that at idle makes a lot of noise but after engaging in any gear there is no noise at all. I thought a wore out throw out bearing was just the opposite, noisy while engaged , quiet at idle. Any ideas?

If it is a "metallic rattling" sound it is possibly the sliding drive disk loosely rattling on the splines of the clutch driver. When the clutch is engaged the sliding drive disk is tightly squeezed in the pack & so it doees not rattle but he flywheels ahead and back on the driver when the clutch is NOT engaged. Often the noise is greater at slow engine speeds than high.

The bearing in the clutch on a 50 turns with the clutch disengaged and does not turn when the clutch is engaged. The bearing could be dry or shot but do not run it if it is bad. A bearing on a 50 that is bad will wreck the crankshaft real fast.
