how to set valves

To get the tappets in position to adjust remove valve cover and spark plugs. Remove plug wires from magnito or distributor!!! This is to remove any danger of a spark which could light off fuel vapors pushed out of the plug holes. Turn the flywheel in normal rotation until the piston on the flywheel side is at bottom dead center on the power stroke. Or to put it another way, all the way down after you feel compression on your thumb held against the sparkplug hole. Then adjust the two left hand valves. Repeat on pulley side and adjust right hand valves. .020 hot or .022 cold

I have to disagree. The valves should be adjusted when the piston is at the top of the compresion stroke. Not at the bottom.

do you guys just make this stuff up? never ever heard of adjusting valves like this!!!. they are adjusted when the cyl is on tdc of the compression stroke. have never even seen that in a manual either as to what ur talking about bottom dead centre.

This is WRONG, no offense. The exhaust valve will be partially open @ this position! The only time BOTH valves on any given cylinder are FARTHEST from being open is at top dead center at the end of the compression stroke. This is the beginning of the power stroke.
