John Deere D Rod Shims

I disconnected a rod so that I can break one cylinder free. I broke it free in one day. I connected the rod I removed the cap from. If I snug up the nuts, I can spin it. But if I tighten them down I can't spin the fly wheel. This is a 1928 D. I did not drop or lose any of the shims I took off, so why is it getting too tight now? All I can figure is I need to add some more shims. Where can I get shims from? I've searched but haven't found any.

I read that last night somewhere. Is there an easy way to determine if the bearing is egg shaped? I assume a visual inspection won"t catch it.
