3020 syncro trans

I noticed today my tractor was really tuff to get into 6-8 road gear it isn't used that often what do you think the problem might be ? shifts good in all the other gears Thanks for any help with this.

If it feels like you kinda shift "through" the gear and end up playing with the shifter to find 8th. it could be loose linkage causing it, new bushings,shims ans pins and yokes in the upper shifter can help this a lot.

Thanks Tim & Jim TIM it dosent drift through it dosent want to come all the way down the left side before you slide it over to the right to pull it into 8th maybe a 1/4 in or so

While it could be a transmission issue, first thing I would check would be the shifting components on the console. When my dad bought our 4020, we thought it had a bad transmission since we could only get it into a few gears (and by a few I mean 2 forward and 1 reverse). We I got to checking it out, I noticed that there was so much sand, dirt, grease and leaves clogging up the collars (see items 10 and 16 below) that it wasn't letting the lever move. After 15 minutes of cleaning and putting it back together, our 4020 has been shifting fine for years.

It does overshoot 8th gear, but I think that's due to the groove worn in the shift lever and possibly the linkage as Tim S mentioned below.

When the bushings and yokes get worn the shift gates get out of alignment,,this will show up like yours is acting,,pull the cowl off and get a hold on the outer quadrant and shake it around, then pull the shifter down to the 5th gear spot and rock the lever left and right ,,as you look into the center you will see the "Latch" cam back and forth, the purpose of the "latch" is to hold one quadrant in place while the other seeks the gear you after..and the actual pivot pin can work loose and wallow the housing out too, this creates a new problem. But removing the shifter and replacing "ALL" the bushings and nylon shims, as well as the yokes and pins ,and of course the center pivot it's self (you can built the shift lever up with weld and grind it back to shape to save some $$),all this will help tighten things up good,,another good idea is to squirt a shot oil down in there every now and then...I'll post a shifter re-build parts list after bit,,most younger parts guys don't know what is needed,,some days I am jealous of their youth,,,but most days I appreciate our experience..

If it does not come across check the latch(number 5 in pic below).I would clean up everything like stated above first.One of our 3020's(we have 4) was shifting hard becaue of a buildup in the dash under the shifter parts.When going over the dash linkage check for wear in the arms on the side of the transmission case as well.

took the cowl off checked for loose linkage etc. found some wear on part # 22 but not real bad shook the shift and watched the cam looked alright to me some wear on the shift lever itself minor groves lubed everything i could see put it back together ran it some it seemed much better this tractor sat outside the last 7 years with very little use ill run it awhile and see what happens Thanks everyone for your help us old guys need it

Try shooting a little b'laster down into the slides and stuff the shift lever comes up through. Fixed the 4020, could hardly get it into 6/8. A can of b'laster is $5 and it takes almost no time to do.
