520 cooling system

I am rebuilding an old 520 and I have had a cooling problem in the past. I have noticed the radiator core sits 1-1/2 inches away from the fan at the nearest point. I have replaced the core in the past and it will only fit one way in the housing. I am suspecting the plates on the top and bottom of the core may be located wrong from the manufacturer. If the top and bottom plates had been flipped over at assembly, I could gain and inch, closer to the fan. If anyone knows what the normal clearance is from the fan to the core, I would appreciate hearing.

Second guessing JD on a tractor that age is probably fruitless, even silly. They had some pretty smart/experienced engineers while designing these machines. I suspect that the space from rad core to fan has something to do with air flow, changing it may be a serious mistake. HTH
