I remember a thread a while back about an upgrade replacement that increased compression and improved starting. I know somebody that is going to do a overhaul on a 4430 this winter and wanted to advise him on this.

I think the new style pistons sub up to the new O/H kits, this is one of the benefits of using Deere parts over after market...

I owned a hard starting 4230 for years. Funny thing about the 30 series hard cold starting thing is you might talk to someone who says they have one that starts fine while others agree theres just won't start in any temperature without ether. Please let us know how the new style kit affects starting.

Mike is correct. The head and valves should also be redone- the 404's tuliped the valves bad and caused hard starting. Also need to make sure injection pump and injectors are up to snuff. A pair of 12 volt batterys hooked in parrallel instead of the 6volts hooked in series is also a must have.

Is the overhaul planned because of low power, oil consumption or pitted sleeves? Or is the tractor just a dog to start in cold weather? Is somebody pounding it with ether?
40F and below it should be plugged in to pre warm anyways?
Has anybody tried the $15 destroker and measuring voltage at the starter WHILE cranking?
Somebody maybe about to spend a wad of overhaul cash over an old set of battery cables or a seeping high pressure valve?
