My dad and I getting ready for a local tractor drive this summer. One with power shift the other is a syncro range. Both are 1968 model 4020 diesel.

Paul, The 4020's are beautiful. I notice you are on the power shift. What size tires (front/back) are on your tractors?

Very nice .I like the feeling you get of going back in time to when they were new.I always remember the new smell[paint and tires] when our local dealer had his new tractors displayed inside right near his office.There would be usually 5 or 6 .Its a lot different today.I just got a new tractor that had been on order since Feb.and was more excited 43 years ago when I purchased my first new 4020.The list price was on the door of factory cab and it was $10,694 and out right price was around $9000+.Times have changed.

the 4020 with the power shift has 18.4x34 rear tires and I think the fronts are 9 or 11Lx15. The other 4020 has 16.9x38 rears the fronts are 9 or 11Lx15.

Its obvious that these are the "younger" JD enthusiasts "collector" tractors as evidenced by the prices they bring but even better is that they can and do pull double duty as a lot are still being used on the farms. Great examples both of them. These have got to be the mid '60,s GTO,s of the tractor world. Over 40 and in our area still some farmers using them to farm 1000 acres.

I was thinking the PS one had 10x16 fronts till you said otherwise lol. I have 18.4x34 and 10x16s and dad runs 18.4x34 and 11x15s. You both have really good looking 4020s.

if they are both "68"s why does one have 2 headlights on the fender and the other only have one, which is correct?

I'm not sure, but I think the twin lights were an option.

I don't know about the "John Deere" badge on the front above the weights. I've always wondered which years had them and why......

Single headlights were on the 4000s in 69/72 and 4020/4320 in 71/72.Many older tractors have had cabs removed or the fenders needed replaced so sometimes they are different.Some of the 4000s only had a light closest to inside of fender.The only problem with one is dimming the lights which probably could be remedied by dimmer switch on deck like newer ones.The decals end up on the front quite often but it seems like that one might go on back seat bracket.Remember these are 45 yrs old so they all could tell a lot of stories and if they are not exactly the same as new, not many things are .They look like very nicely repainted tractors that anyone would be proud of.

Thanks for the info..... No doubt that I would be proud to own either one. It takes a lot of work to get one to look that good. I'm still working on my 4010....sometimes I wonder if I'll ever make it look "right". The paint on the tractors looks great.

I have had a few tractors that the previous owner refused to use them after they were repainted as he did not want to even get on them as they thought they were too nice.As soon as they arrived at my place if there was a job for them even pulling a spreader or feed wagon they got put to work until they were sold.I have never had one that was too good to work kinda like some of my friends [FIRST}wives.
