4555 starting problem

We will try batteries first even though they check out as they came from WallMart and appear to be smaller than normal. The 4555 we have has trouble starting[slow cranking] and it appears it has two 12 volt batteries hooked up in series is this correct?Happy Thankgiving!

All 55 series tractors should be 12 V with the batteries in parallel. I would think 24V would fry the electronics on a 12V tractor. It possible this hard starting is caused by hyd problem. I'd suggest to install a de-stroking screw as that would only cost $15. Has starter been checked lately?

They are in parallel just wrote in wrong.The 4440s all have two 6 volts thats what threw me.I think it is probably the batteries as it starts quick if it will turn over.Thanks

My 4255 came from factory with two 12V batteries so I guess JD engineers thought two 12's were better than two 6's.

Measure voltage at the starter while cranking. Test voltage post to post on each battery while cranking.
As previously stated, the de-stroked is a must have.
There is a very powerful gear reduction PM starter motor without the offset.
The mighty Delco 44MT will wail that engine over if equipped with good batteries.
