jd 70 rings

anyone know of a source for standard rings for a 70 gas that is not chrome. I have always thought that chrome rings will not seat well unless you bore. Russ

Proper honing with a good crosshatch is important to good ring seating. Most people hone them too smooth. I always use the chrome ring & never had a problem. The rings that are manufactured today like Hastings or Sealed Power ,Perfect Circle they are prelapped for easy seating & less ring wear. Call Hastings they will tell you what grit stone to use on honing your block. What are you going to do about the ring ridge in the cylinders? Have you had the cyl measured? How much wear ? How much wear is in the top ring land on your pistons? What are you going to do with the tractor after the overhaul?

Well there is very little ridge, but when I drop an old ring in the cylinder I have about 200 thousand. That is about 10 times what it should be. That is figuring .004 per inch of bore or about .024. I know what I should do, New pistons and .045 boring. The tractor will probably go to auction, and I expect to lose quite a bit of money. Even with my free labor.

That will probably be the 70 at the auction with a new paint job and complete engine overhaul.

It was supposed to be recently overhauled before I bought it. Then the previous owner got water in the gas tank, destroying carb and piston locked up. Most auctioneers call anything repainted restored. My tractors are repaired and repainted not restored. Russ
