2940 Hi-Lo shifting problem

Tractor was looked at by some students at a community college and now the hi lo shifter feels different than it did before and it pops out of high easily. Farmer says that the shifter used to have a very crisp feel to it with 2 detents. Now it feels crisp going into low but sluggish going into high and now the lever has to be moved a lot farther down to go into high than before. It works fine in high and low but it just feels different and now pops out of high. I have replaced the hi lo valve spring with the correct one and it didnt change anything. Any ideas?

The detent is all in the upper cover, if it was removed it's easy to let them "pop" out of place, pull the shift lever back off and see if there is a detent on "both" sides of the shift arm under the cover, my guess is one is out of place..and the spring is being distorted..

Maybe the the detent ball spring crumpled. Parts schematic is for open station tractor.

If you look at a diagram of the lower cover, the detent is on the driver side of the cover. You must pull the detent out before the hi lo valve is pulled out or it will shoot into the valve body. The detents in the upper cover that contain both levers are only for the pto.
