I changed my 4010 diesel from the 24 volt system to a 12 volt system with a alternator.I would like to put a volt or a amp meter gauge on the instrument panel.which one should i install? Is one any better than the other? I have the single wire alternator if it makes any difference. thanks for any help.

install a volt meter. much easier to install and an alt will put out more amps than most gauges will handle

Ammeter is harder to wire in and make it work right, but if you have it you will know more about if you are draining or charging. I run a voltmeter and if the volts are not at least 13.0 when I am parking it (with it running) I turn off the heavy drains like the field lights and let it run a few minutes to bring the voltage back up in the system. 12.75v is considered 100% charged. Generally I have 13.5 to 14.0 volts after I have been running a while without headlights on.
