how long to out of frame 8640

When they did dad's 8430 it was about a day and a half for removing and the same for reinstalling IIRC.

(quoted from post at 21:15:14 11/05/12) can anyone give a reasonable estimate of time involved in r&r the 6619 in an 8640? thanks
Probably be better off taking it somewhere and putting an 855 cummins in it for about the same money.

It normally takes me all afternoon to get one out and all day to put it back...they are one of the meanest clutches to line back up on, I wedge a chisel shaped bolt with a wire on it to wedge the clutch plates in place then remove it through the starter hole, the extra weight of the clutches keeps them hanging down out of alieghnment..

thank you, its been several years since i was in to an older 4wd, i thought i remembered havin to split at cab, roll the front end away and then pullin the engine from the front half. Tim, all afternoon... ive worked with guys who couldnt do an oil change in that time. no wonder you are on your own, a dealer couldnt afford to pay the service manager at that rate :)

It is amazing what a difference experience and extra knowledge can make.We have a local ex JD mechanic[19yrs]that was fixing lawnmowers almost before he went to grade school that has his own shop and he can do most anything twice as fast as the latest JD tech school graduate and it will be fixed right. We all have to learn sometime but many spend a lot of time in the computer room of archives to fiqure out where to start and the clock keeps ticking at $85 an hour.

Oh I still remember my first one, I had a time with those front engine mount bolts, but now I have some special tools that I made, and they do go a lot smother with experience.
