Trying out my (new) chain saw

I bought a Poulan 220 Pro chainsaw with a 16 inch bar at a yard sale for $10. I got it with a Poulan Pro 22" high wheel push mower for $30 for both. They both looked fairly new and unused. The owner said he never got the chainsaw to run and mower to run ocasionally and it ran rough.
The old saying "if it looks to good to be true" applied here. The chainsaw was taken to two different repair shops and supplies and tools and fuel and additive plus the origional purchas price, around $100. It does run good and will idle as long as I need it to. The mower was taken to a friend to check it out. All it needed was a good spark plug. The one that was in it was caked with burnt oil. It started right up but, knocked and smoked like a tar kiln (kettle). The friend said it was probably used like a Bush hog. I bought a new blade for it ($20) and will try to take the old oil out and flush it and add 50wt and STP and run it till it quits. Anyway, I used the chainsaw to clear out the trees that had grown around and in the frame of this war model "A" that has the war model 4 spd transmission. I parked it here around 12 years ago.

The trees (the biggest ones) are Tulip Poplar and the small ones are Box Elder. I cut everything up to two ft. lengths, larger than 2" diameter.

If you add STP it aint going to last long.You will hear a boom and the rod will knock a hole in the block.I had one that smoked and added STP and it slung a rod.I have heard of a lot of people doing that and got the same results.The mowers has no oil pump they got oil slingers.The STP wont sling off because its too thick and then no oil is going to the rotating assembly and then you loose your motor.Winter is not far off i would make a winter prodject out of it and tear down the motor and overhaul it or find a diffrent motor to put on it.

I wish I had that box elder to turn on a wood lathe!!!

Come on down to West Tennessee and get all you want. Box Elder wood is most always doddy (rotten and or stained in the middle) Tractor Dan knows a retired school teacher in Sardis Tn. that makes wooden bowls and wooden vases on a lathe because of those imperfections (interesting patterns).
