hi all i'm workin on a 1940 gas A it had a cracked head along with stuck. the cylinders were pretty rough so i tried honing out but unsuccesful now i'm geting used head,45over pistons and boring the block. A new head gasket is on order but when I touch the washers for the head they stick to a magnet. Are the lead washers for the head a hardware store item or do I need to go deere for them?? thanks in advance for all info

There are two washers on the head studs. One is a hardened washer directly behind the nut, and then the "lead washer" this can be solder wrapped around the stud or you can still get them from Deere. They basically are used as a lubricant when you torque down the nuts. No other purpose is served by the lead washers.

Get them from Deere, I got some this summer and while I can't recall how much they were exactly, they were pretty inexpensive.

Wrap the studs with solder. The lead washers are used for a lubricant while tightening the head bolts.

If you are going to use the Lead Washers, place a thin "Hardened" Washer over the lead washer, then the Nut..
I have just as much good service from using the Hardened Washer and "Gasket Maker" under the hardened Washer...
If you don't use the Hardened washers, that Lead squeezes out and is dangerously Sharp..unless you take the time and aggavation to peel it off and trim it up..
I ALWAYS Lube the threads on the studs before I install the Nuts..

Hey Tugboat,
I have to agree with Kent. I don't ever remember there being any washers on these head bolts. The lead washers were only used to lube the torque procedure, not for any kind of sealing. These washers can be purchased on e-bay from many vendors or Deere herself. As was stated here even solder can be used. Good Luck!
