Smoke coming from clutch on my 1950 B

So I just bought my first JD. Over all the tractor is in great shape and just needs a few things here and there to really make it a nice ride. I noticed right away that there is a little bit of smoke coming from the clutch pulley. There was not any real heat to the touch so I figured there must be a slight oil leak causing the smoke. After removing the rear wheel (a nightmare) and removing the clutch assembly I didn't really find anything obvious. I cleaned up everything and greased all of the necessary parts and put it back together with new oil and a filter. I noticed a bit of smoke again after running the tractor. Any suggestions??? I'm a newbie to these JD's so I'm looking for any advice I can get.

While I don't have a B of that vintage, I will say that my G and A have had the same issue... in their case it is not smoke, but crankcase fumes.

Your new tractor may not be in as great as it seemed. The "smoke" is most likely blow-by past the rings, and the easiest place for it to exit the crankcase is thru the clutch area. The good news is that you actually got the rear wheel to move. Good luck, it's nothing that some money and work won't fix. Mike

Well I suppose I'll toss a compression check on it (if possible) and go from there. I'm not too worried at this point. It's not a terrible amount of smoke and I suppose 60+ years of use and abuse can lead to this.

Isn't there a crankcase vent pump on the fan shaft and tube from it to the carb intake pipe? If the pump weren't working or if the tube were plugged, couldn't that be allowing the blowby to escape through the clutch?

Run a comp check, would bet one cyl is much lower than the other. If so try some LUCUS or a couple qts of marvel mystery and put it on plow for 3-4 hours, if stuck rings they may release. Then check comp again and see if there i a noticeable comp raise on the low cyl.
