R adjusting rack

How do you adjust rack on injection pumps on R? They are on 10 right now but smokes black smoke pretty hard all the time. Had pumps and injectors rebuilt but can't seem to get to run clean. Thanks for any help. Doug

Your injection timing is either off or you have low compression. But low compression should smoke white & start hard. To adjust the rack opening limit, remove timing cover on left side of engine (cam & crank gears are under it) then find the 1/4" bolt on the governor linkage & turn it out for more fuel & in for less. Mine is on Max which is I believe 16 or 18 on the rack & never smokes at all unless overloaded. I've never adjusted injection timing so I can't help you there except that its quite critical & the procedure is in the manual.

It was bored to 730 pistons and 730 nozzles, starts easy and runs good but smokes black smoke idleing. timing is right on the money. had pumps and injectors setup twice to make sure everything was right. Only thing I know is to back off rack to 8 or 9. Thanks Doug

That wont change a thing at idle. That only limits how far they open. I.e. Max fuel delivery position. At idle the rack is barely cracked open. I vaguely recall another Guy with this issue on here, maybe a search? I believe the timing needs to be different than an R due to the piston design & different compression you have now. Renaissance Tractor has done these I believe, maybe ask him too. I will soon need to do this to mine so let me know how you end up. :)

That IS..remove the TOP....

DO NOT remove the SIDE Cover, or you will be picking up loose Ball Bearings..(Governor Bearings).

If that "R" Idles at the correct speed..why is it Smoking at Idle..??
Idle speed is dictated by fuel delivery..not any throttle plate..

We pulled 4-16 plow and you thought you were in a tractor pull, black smoke 20 feet high. I understand rack meters fuel. So shouldn't it cut fuel back with lower numbers?

Yes it should....

Something is very wrong with the set-up..

Does the engine change RPM as it should, with throttle position changes..??
Have you done anything to the Governor (such as opened it?)..
A Rack setting of 17 (on the Original engine set-up) would have been good and only smoked once the engine was at Full Power...and smoked good, after that..BUT, NOT at idle...
Something must be mechanically wrong..Injection timing may be the problem..or Injector spray pattern..??
A Stock "R" will stroll with 4x16" in 2nd and 3rd..depending on ground conditions..here in Ohio..

At idle you can see some black snoke, wide open no pull it is what I would say it should be on a hard pull. Throttle works normal. plowed about 30 acres with it runs good, no slober on exhaust.

I'd take a close look at your air cleaner and piping. It might be severely plugged, not letting enough air even for stock settings.

How well does it Idle--way down slow..??
It should Idle perfect on both cylinders right down to a "Tick-Over"..
With the 730 pistons and the re-worked Injectors..there are many variables...
Are these the same size pumps, with different nozzles..?
Cracking Pressures changed, or different than the original injectors ..?
Tell us more....

Yes a lower setting lowers the point of Max fuel output. At any load less than that you've changed nothing. The rack moves back & forth with the throttle lever, which rotates the slotted inlet openings on the pumps, creating a larger or smaller opening & thus fuel amount to be sent to the injector. The governor acts against the throttle lever, keeping the rack from opening too far which would overspeed the engine. As load increases & engine rpm drops, the governor gets weaker so the throttle lever wins, pulling the rack farther open. The setting of 8 or 10 is only the maximum opening position, it does not affect fuel delivery at any speed/load below Max. At idle the rack is at a very small position, maybe 0.5 or 1 for example. So the smoke is NOT an excess fuel issue. More fuel at idle simply speeds up the engine. That's how you throttle a diesel- as I said, I'm 99% sure the timing needs to be somewhere other than at the are setting.

You should have much higher cylinder pressure now, this would in theory require less advance for injection timing. Perhaps its laboring all the time due to too much advance. You should be able to call the Guy that did the pumps & get answers?
