John Deere A clutch

Ok i just got my 1944 A up and running after ALOT of work, and iv come appon another problem. when i push the clutch lever forward the tractor at first took right off, and the clutch kicked off, but now after driveing it for about 2 hours the clutch wont pop out and the tractor barely creeps along. is the clutch needing adjustment or whats wrong?

Sounds like your clutch is slipping. With engine off & clutch lever in the engaged or lock over position, tighten each of 3 castle nuts evenly. Pull lever back and you should hear a distinct pop. If the pop isn't there or the disengagement & lock over resistance feels week, repeat the process. Don't over tighten the castle nuts. If it's still to loose, turn each nut to the next slot to pass cotter key hole on operating bolt. Too tight and you wont be able to lock over center. After properly adjusted, you should feel the clutch mechanism lock over. Engaging & disengaging should not be a chore. Assuming all your parts (clutch dogs, operating bolts, & facings) are not severely worn you should be OK here.

You said you did alot of work on it. Did you for get to put the cotter pins it the bolts on the clutch to hold the nuts in place.Thay will run loose on the tractor and make the clutch slip.If you had the flywheel off and didnt take the end play out of it when you put it back on it will also make the clutch act up.

Replace the 3 springs on the outer part of the assembly. These springs lose their ability to return the plates to the proper location and will allow the clutch to stick as if it was engaged. They are less than 5 bucks each.
