Hi

I'm fixing the PTO on my 4020. I've taken off the rear housing to replace the seal and O rings in the pto. The piece, referred to in the online parts catalog as the guide, part number R33855, has two grooves in it. I assume they are worn there by the seal. Can this be repaired in any fashion or is a new one in order? I'm told a new one is just under $500.00. Not sure I want to spend that much unless there is no other way.
 
You might be able to get a "speedy sleeve" that'll go over the journal where the wear is, take you new seals to a bearing/power train house and ask them. A sleeve is a very thin bushing you slid over the shaft and usually epoxy in place. It provides a new surface for the seal to work against

If a correct size "speedy sleeve" is unobtainable you might try a salvage yard.
 
The new seal is narrower than the bore in the housing allowing you to locate the seal slightly different than original. Measure the distance to the wear marks on the shaft then measure to the lips on the new seal. Usually you can shift the seal about 1/8" to place it on a smooth area of the guide. If someone has already done this before it may not work. I have not tried a speedi sleeve but it should work also.
 
I have considered Speedi Sleeves, and even had the dimensions wrote down here some where Darn it (I was going to share them with you)I think the cost of them would be around $45, they are pricey, but way cheaper than a new part,,I always thought it was odd that that area would wear so badly... Another thing was brought up on here by some one a while back when speaking of seals, was un-doing the garter spring and re-tieing it a bit tighter..some thing that I had never thought of before...
 
Sometimes the wear on a shaft is not from the seal but the dirt & crap that get lodged there by the seal, especially if it's oil. The seal holds it against the spinning shaft
