Hello,

I do some walking, usually 1.5 miles a day.
Any of you do a lot of walking? I just strap on my pedometer and read it at the end of the day.
To-day it reads 9810 feet; 1.82 miles, calories burned 162.4. I know I ate more then that.!

Guido.

Before I retired, my office desk was on one end of the plant and the line was on the other. I would easily get 5 miles plus each day. And I loved it. Then some genius manager thought it would be better to move my group closer to the line. Then he was always whining because we were always late for his meetings. I still like to walk a lot each day but sometimes weather persuades me to cut back.

I have found I do a lot more walking as I get older. It usually results from getting up, walking to another room to get something and when I get there I totally forgot why I did it. I then usually start the whole process over again. This happens more and more often so I get good exersize.

I'm leaving in 2 weeks for Colorado Elk Muzzloading season. We do 2 miles horizontal and 1/2 mile verticle to spike camp with a weeks worth of provisions and clothing and guns on a pack. It's butt kicker. I've been trying to put on 2-3 miles a day and do 65lb pack work outs and stairs 3xs a week. At work this week watched contractor tight blade level bituminous road. There were some pretty tired young guys out there chasing belly dumps 6.5 miles each way dumping spreads 980' long a load. Too much running for this guy!

Hi Guido,

I mixed 21 wheelbarrow loads of concrete by hand yesterday afternoon, and about the same number two evenings before. There was some walking involved in wheeling each load to where it was needed, but honestly, it was mostly mixing and shoveling. My shoulders hurt all night both times. What does this have to do with what you asked? Not too much, I guess.

Guido, I walk 2 miles, 5 days every week (at about 6:00am) I do this in prox 34.5 to 36.5 minutes, on average. Occasionally if the Moon and Stars are in correct order 33.5 minutes! Personally for me it is the fact that one needs to get their heart rate up for 25 minutes to get in shape. Not the calories burned, Most of us as we get older get a more sedentary so a Regular Exercise Regime is more necessary than ever. My morning routine is not a leisurely stroll! I am marching it off is rapid order! This is what I do!

If I so much as tried to walk that far #1 my doctor would get mad at me and #2 my right knee would go AWOL on me. Doctor say 100 yards take 5 minutes and rest and then maybe another 100 yards. Doctors says wear your knee brace if your going to be on your feet much and a cane

Piker..."8^)

I'm 62, about to be 63. I have borderline high blood pressure (14x/8x) and DO NOT want to deal with BP meds and their side effects.

Part of my regimen to stay off BP meds includes 2 miles a day, 6 days a week @ 4mph on the treadmill. I should actually bump that up a notch as I don't even breathe hard at that rate any more. The idea is to get the heart rate up and keep it up for 20 minutes.

I wore a pedometer one day, and in addition to the 2 miles on the treadmill, I walked 6 miles just dubbing around the house and property.

Last week on my annual bicycling and backpacking trip to the Adirondacks I walked 17 miles on one day, more than half of it with a loaded frame backpack. A normal day for me is quite a bit less than that, but I like to be able to do more without being sore the next day as a result.

My wife has one of those straps on her wrist, she trys to get 10,000 steps in everyday.
My wife also has a real nice tread mill that she inherited when her dad died 10 years ago.

My brain would say. You can do it. My knees would say no we can't. I do most of my walking at night. Walk flush and walk back. Repeat as many times as needed.

Hello Wile E,

I have a thread mill as well, mine is 20 years older then your wife one. It only gets used when weather is bad. It has not been bad in 10 years............................ HA! HA!

Guido.

Walking and bicycling outside when the weather is good. In the winter I will cross country ski. I enjoy that much more than shoveling snow.

25 years ago, when I was planning construction on my mountain, I put the outbuildings a quarter mile down. Returning to the house is equivalent to climbing a 10 story building, twice per day. When feeling energetic, I walk down to the pavement, half a mile with 400 foot elevation change. Beautiful place to take a small hike, easy enough my knees don"t complain.

Apparently a good plan, I"m far healthier than my sedentary siblings. Met up with some old hiking buddies last June in the Alps. Great hiking, and I wasn"t the slow one. Was just like the travel brochures show.

The way the pheasant situation is looking this year, I won't have to drag too many birds along on my daily walk after them. I'll be 77 in a few days and that grass gets harder walking all the time but I'll keep trying. Normally I walk 6 days a week, 1.7 miles. Rather slow pace though especially in this heat.

Hello Zachary Hoyt,

To get up next day rested and ready to go, you need to pace the amount of walking you do.
You got me beat1 I only do about 3 miles on my high days. Mind you I am also doing other things. I don't remember how much a soccer player runs in a game(DID THAT),But I cam tell you the last five minutes are a bit tough!

Guido.

Hello John A,

It is important to get the heart rater up a bit,
Mine was up to 164 at the last test. That is super fast for me, as my normal rate is 60 or less!

Guido.

Hello Stan in Oly, WA,

Yea!.... that tells me what you did, and Yes, that was not my question, and my arms and shoulders are not as sore as yours!

Guido.

Hey Guido, I walk 3.3 miles per trip three times per week. My doctor said to continue it to keep my blood pressure down. I've met a lot of neighbor's on my walks and brought home a lot of aluminum. Gerard

Guido,

Walking is the best thing for the back. I used to walk 3 miles a day, to put my back back in shape.

Instead of walking, I like to exercise on a 3 wheel bicycle, 4-5 miles on country roads.

George

Hello George Marsh,

My back has been acting up lately, and the walks have kept me more flexible. I can still put my heels up to my belly, and bent my head down to my knees while seating. These exercises kepps me limber. Keep on walking..............

Guido.

Hello ASEguy,

Walking does help keeping your blood pressure in check. I do keep active and keep my weight about the same year round. My motto is:
I am going to wear out........... NOT rust out!

Guido.

When I was reading water meters I walked up to 23 miles a day. Now about 5 but I live up on a hill. My walks are downhill, cross the river and back up the other side. About 300 ft elevation change in 3 blocks. Then turn around and back down, cross creek again and up to home....James

Hello jwal10,

You certainly got the most ground covered from the rets of us..............NOW here is my question: How often to you need to acquire new foot ware?

Guido.

Guido,
10 years ago DR wanted to fuse L4 & L5. I said no way. Alternative was exercise, walking turned out to be the best thing to keep back mussles strong to hold spine in place.

No lifting heavy objects. No riding on a mower that bounces the back, had neighbor mow using my mower. Had to give up goldwing and caddy. SUV, mini van, and truck seats only. Mowing with a IH C is OK. Have to go slower with my Jubilee.
George

Hello George Marsh,

L5 is my problem. Bulge, spur, and arthritis. Old surfing injury(1986) A couple of years ago, put me down pretty good. Not it only hurts at times and in certain positions.

Guido.

Guido,
It's heck to get old. I have spurs and arthritis from my head to my L5. My disks are worn out, I'm about an inch shorter. The hinges on L4&L5 are missing so is they move, pinch nerves in spine, lots of fun.

Can't say how it all happened. DR say I could have been born this way. I have to sleep on my back on the floor to keep spine straight. Don't know why I have a bed, worthless.

Waiting for reseachers to be able to transplant brains. I want my brain put in a new young pain free body.

Been retired 10 years, but still active, considering.

Hang in there,
George

Hello George Marsh,

Soon as I'm done here, I'll go on the floor for the same thing. Doctor said I'm still in no need of any intervention. Been retired since 1999..........

Guido.
