Compressor motor - grrr

A few weeks ago my compressor stopped working, plugged it in and just got a humming sound. Maybe bad starter capacitor? Replaced that, same thing. Seemed like it was trying to move but just couldn"t, even with the belt disconnected and with me turning it by hand a little.

Okay, motor burned out. Ordered a new one, which arrived today. I wasn"t sure which way the old one turned so I figured if I plugged it in and watched it try to turn I could get an idea...you can guess what happened. Started right up and runs fine now.

I can only assume it had some moisture inside. Anyway, I have a spare motor now if it ever does REALLY burn out.
 
Motors have a starting switch.If you asked for help before you bought a new motor I or some one eles would have told you to check the starting switch.A common problem with single phase motors.I did a lot of motor repair over the last 55 years.Mostly starting switches, capacitors and bearings.Some motors develope excessive end play and dont close the switch when they stop.A few fiber washers fix that.Always shut air compressors off at the end of the day.
 
Agreed that the starter switch was the problem. With the tube extension in place on the nozzle, spray some WD 40 in ventilating slots at the end where the power cord enters. Wait an hour or so before applying power again.
 
Belt drive? the fan cast into the pump pulley would have told you which way the pump rotated, and thus you could have avoided attempting to start it up again. You could have blissfully gone about changing that motor and never had to look back (and would never have discovered the old motor was not bad).
