Remote Start

Don't rightly know, but one of my wife's brothers had an aftermarket unit installed on his pickup.

He had a detached garage, and one cold morning, he reached out the front door of his house and hit the remote start button. Apparently the shifter on the pickup hadn't completely clicked from "Reverse" into "Park". Anyway, the pickup started up and backed out through the garage door. Stalled against a light pole across the street.

I would assume a factory installed unit would have safeguards against that.

My wife has e Valet brand on her Kia van and had the same on a Chrysler van for ten years. The only thing I don't like is I never put one on my truck.

I install few of them now and then . Someone messed up on that one . Should not be able to bypass neutral switch if done right . They are a pain to install , Especially on newer cars .

Why does she want remote start?
Probably Cheaper and more reliable to trade for a vehicle with factory remote.
I've noted how people will harp about the price of fuel Yet they cold start then idle their vehicles and equipment for 1/2 and hour to warm then up. They could purchase electricty much cheaper at a few cents per hour.
Tell her to find and extension cord and plug in the coolant heater.

Astrostart, used almost exclusively up here in NW Minnesota. Everyone has them in their cars.

Daughter and husband have on two cars. They love them of course. Son in law says he has to do a couple of things correctly in sequence when he shuts the one off or it will not function. I always tell them, one of these days they will go out to their car and a rod will be sticking out the side of the hood. Of course I am a pessimist. I like to watch my oil gauge and tach when when an engine starts. My Dakota engine has up and run away twice on me when fully warmed up and just sitting there idling. I just said, whooa, but before I could turn key it idled back down. This computer I am sitting at right now does goofy things every now and then so I just don't trust a remote start. I know, sky is falling.

We have a "Cool Start" brand, recommended by the local car stereo shop. I have dealt with the owners for close to 20 years. And BTW, they shut off automatically after 20 minuets.

I would second Astrostart, also Autostart/Polar Start are also good brands. Stay away from some of the really cheapie ones, Bulldog security is a good example of one to stay away from.
I install many of them this time of year, they are ProStart but are made by the same company that makes the Autostart brand. They are only available in Canada through Canadian Tire. They have proven to be very reliable. There are too many units available to really tell you the best, I can just go on experience. The biggest thing is to make sure whomever is installing it has done many of them so that they are familiar with the brand and are comfortable programming all the features etc. The worst thing is to try to install a unit that you are not familiar with, it increases the time for install and potentially causes problems.

Also, depending on what year her Altima is it may also need a security system bypass to remote start. If you post the year I can look that up for you.
If installed correctly the vehicle should not start if the gear lever is not in either park or neutral. As far as manual transmission vehicles, I don't do 'em, too much to go wrong. The run time is usually programmable, many units have a 15 minute run time as default. If the vehicle has power door locks but not keyless entry you can also add that functionality.
