what is this device?

This device was recently given to me; the owner has Alzheimers's so the origin and use is unknown. The body is about 18" x 4 " and the handle crank extends the metal bar upwards. It is very heavy. There is a curved cradle type platform on the top with some sort of etching on it. It appears to be an old jack? but I would appreciate any help in further identification.

Very interesting piece - can"t wait to see the other responses. Definitely looks like some kind of a jack.
 
It is a jack. I think it was probably used on old heavy equipment such as threshing machines and steams tactors. That's my guess and I'm sticking to it. lol
 
It looks like an old Conestoga wagon jack to me. I'm in my 80's and too young to remember them being used, but that is what I would say it is.

I 'googled' Conestoga wagon jack in the 'images' section and there it is! You, sir, have a very good memory. :)
 
It's a jack, obviously. I was watching that new National Geographic show Abandoned the other night and they found two huge jacks that looked alot like that one in the old Vermont Marble Co factory. They were so big the guy took one of them and welded a ring with pegs to the top of it to make it usable as a coat rack, etc. Can't remember the price he was planning to ask for it.... but it's alot more than I'd be able to pay for a coat rack....
 
That wood make sense. Is the bottom wood? If so that would be how to change the hight to match your wagon.
 
Thanks to all for the identification. Indeed, Google had photos of the exact jack. Along with the jack there were 2 very heavy iron plates. I wonder if they were bases for the jack. I will try to post a photo of them.
