Battery chargers

I have a 200 amp wheeled battery charger, bought from Sears about 10 years ago. Tried charging my Farmall H , 6 volt battery at 2 amp setting. Checked it after about an hour and found barrery was very hot, close to boiling. Checked amps with meter and it was putting out 40 amps. Is this charger toast, or are there any replacable parts that would cause this error in performance?

Also, have I also toasted the 6 v.battery?

uh? John.........didja know when you "miss-connect" the battery charging clamps, you will DISCHARGE and then recharge yer battery to the other polarity. And YES, yer 6-volt battery is TOAST. Byte the bullet and replace yer RUINED battery. .......respectfully, Dell

Did you have it set on 6 volt or 12 volt while charging? Might want to get a new battery charger.

Don't know who builds Sears battery chargers but I have a 200 amp Schumacher wheeled charger. The 6 volt setting is 40 amps, and the 12 volt settings are: 2,10,40, and 200 amp start. There is probably nothing wrong with your charger. DH

I ain't quite that dumb.... I did set charger on 6 volts, and did connect + to + and - to -, removed battery from tractor altogether. and I DID set it on 2 amp setting.

Probably a simple bad switch that you use to go from 2amp to a higher amp setting if it is like the ones I have seen. Open it up and check that switch out bet it is not working

Hello John Fulton,
A battery that hot maybe toast. A load test will verify that. Load it at 1/2 the amp rating for 15 seconds. You are looking for 4.8 volts or better at the end of the test at 70 degrees F.
You need to check the charger as well. Hook it up to another battery verify your setting and do the amp test againg. It probaly lost the contact for the low amp setting, and its contacting the high setitng that is my guess.

I don't think the charger is toast, after all it's charging quit well, even more than it should. Might be a switch or contact set in there messed up so it's not working right and that can probably be fixed, might have to learn more about battery chargers than you wanted to before you get it done. And it's already broken right?

OK, My Bad. (I hate that term, but now I"m using it)
The Sears charger has a setting for 2 amp,/12 Volts. The 6 volt setting is for 50 Volts. I naturally thought I should go with the lower 2 amp setting for a 6 volt battery.
I reset it to 50 amp/6 volts, is charging now, will let you know if it blows up when I go out in an hour to do the chores, LOL.
