Drilling holes in glass tile

I need to drill some holes in glass tile. What is the preferred method? Hole size can be anywhere between 3/4 and 1 1/4. What about rough edges?

I've never used one, but Home Depot used to sell drill bits specifically for glass tile. If there's a Home Depot near you, you might check with someone in the flooring department.

Hardware stores and hobby shops have tile drills with spear tips to drill glass and ceramic tiles but may not be more than 1/4". For the size you want you will have to take to a glass shop or if the edge doesn't need to be nice you can drill a circle of holes to chip the larger hole out. HTH

I have drilled quite a few holes in glass block so my wife could make Christmas ornaments. I'd have to go out to the shop and look at the bit but the holes were big enough to stuff a string of Christmas tree lights through. If I remember correctly I got the bits at Menards.

drill press, copper pipe, grinding compound, clay wall around the area with a coolant? The spinning pipe is the bit and compound abrasive is the cutter.

Simmilar tojackbrit, I have glued down a piece of plywood with the same size hole, and then use a carbide hole saw with lots of water. Stop once in a while and use a wet shop vac and suck out the grindings and water. Go slow!

Go to ebay, buy it now. I purchased a small cheap set of 5 for around $15. Not as nice looking as the ones cannonball posted, but cheaper. If you need an individual diamond hole saw you can get them for around $3-4. I use my drill press and use a few drops of water to keep it cool.

I drill 1/2 inch holes in unusal glass bowls or cookie jars to make flower pots for the Boss. No ruff edges to speak of.

Drilled 1/2 inch holes in glass block to put Christmas lights inside block.

Haven't tried in glass, but I use diamond coated hole saws for porcelain tile. Got em at Home DePot. Pricey, at about 10 bucks for the 5/16 diameter, but when you have the tile already set, you really, really, don't wanna break it.

Yesterday my son called and said a huge plate glass window in the store his missionary office is renting had a crack growing up from the bottom. Saw this thread a little later and did some research.
He went to Lowes and picked up a glass bit for a Dremel tool. Followed instructions and drilled a 1/8 hole at the end of the crack. so far so good..
