well guys, everything was going great yesterday, got my 600 fenders and hood ready to spray the finish coat. Got all but the backsides done and Bam ! smoke rolled from my compressor motor.

compressor is about 2yr old ,used very little
cambell hausfield 2stage with a 5hp Magnetec Century 22amp motor.

We took the motor apart and the copper windings in one spot are toast.

What would cause such sudden failure as this, compressor was running when the smoking started and i shut it down quickly.

like i said, this compressor is like new and used very little.

If you had sufficient electricity I would say the motor was just defective. I've never had very good luck with Campbell Hausfield. I think Chicago Electric is better quality.

I Think..Simply it was a FACTORY Defect... That sadly only showed up after the warranty was out... That happens to me Occasionally... on something Rarely used.. It's a Bummer i know! Larry KF4LKU

thanks, must of been a weak point in the winding, we were only using it to prime some tractor parts, it only kicked on a couple times while using it.
went to tsc and picked up a marathon 6hp 23 amp for 229.00 plus tax.

we took the smoked motor apart and the copper windings at the rear were burnt about 1-2"

Agree, defect. I came home the other day and my CH 60 gal was running. Went over to see what was going on. Motor, compressor and tank were ALL too hot to touch. Pressure showed 60 lbs. God knows how long it was running. Pulled the plug.
Next morning I plugged it in, it ran up to 125 and shut down as normal.
Lesson learned though, I'll never leave it "ON" or plugged in when not using again.
