Nuffield 460 won't start

I have a Nuffield 460 that won"t start. Hoping someone has some ideas as to cause, or can even suggest what to look at next.

I"ve had it for 7 or 8 years, and it"s always started easily. This spring the first time I started it, it stalled. Started it again and it seem to run fine.

The next weekend, it started briefly (15-20 seconds), stalled and won"t start again.
Stalls were uneventful (no extra noise), as if it ran out of fuel.

It has a Simms inline fuel injector pump. I"ve bled it at the bolts above the inspection plate, and have lots of fuel there.

I opened the inspection plate on the fuel injector pump, and the rack moves freely, and all 4 pistons move up and down when cranking.

I pulled the fuel line off where it returns to the fuel tank, and I get fuel flow when cranking the engine, but the pressure is fairly low. It runs out of the line, but doesn"t shoot out with any force.

When cranking there is no sign of it firing at all.

One more "oddity". I didn"t know the fuel pump was supposed to have oil for lubrication. When I opened it to drain it and refill, I got about a cup of diesel out of oil drain. Keep in mind that I haven"t opened/drained this before in the 7 years I"ve owned it, and I doubt the guy who owned it before me had either.

I can only think of two possibilities:
1) The pump is not putting out the fuel with enough pressure to the injectors.
- How do can I check this?
- Do I need to bleed something else?

2) The valve train is somehow not working, and there is no compression
- Does this make sense? How is the cam shaft driven?

The cam is probably driven off the crankshaft gear
and are timed together. Something may have failed either on the cam gear or the cam shaft.
The valves are probably not closing. You may be able to see the camshaft by dropping the oil pan.
Get a service manual you probably need to get to those gears. It should give you the procedure for removing and changing the failed part. The woodruff key may have sheared. Hal
PS: Talk to good mechanic that works on tractors.

First, add oil to pump top plug until it runs out level plug on side. Diesel fuel lubricates too, so maybe pump is not damaged yet. Open throttle 1/2 and push excess fuel rod, and with injector nuts loose crank engine. Should be a good shot at each one. If not, cam bearings may be damaged in the pump from lack of oil.

There is 2 hex screws below the ejection lines that face outward. loosen one of them and pump with the had pump till you get solid fuel and retighten and try starting. I have a 1060 Nuffield and a Leyland 272.
