Progress on the BW Disk

I called Kelsem's in Waterloo, Ia. I have 4 bearings, 2 spools and some other parts coming. Got home after work and started in on the stuck spool again. I heated it for a long time, it was close to cherry red and then went to work on it with the air hammer. Nuthin. Heated it some more and tried again without any progress. So I picked up the BFH and started to hit it at the base of the horn with the ball end of the hammer. Finally moved a little! I soaked it down and beat some more and then started driving it back and forth. Got it to move about 1/8 inch. More soaking and more beating and it finally moved some, so with renewed vigor, I kept turning and hitting it. Finally broke loose and came off. There was a small gap behind the small spool behind the bearing, so I drove a couple of small chisels into the space and the bearing and spool moved about 3/8 inch. Supper came then, so I soaked it down good and quit, I think it will drive off OK tomorrow evening. I tried the candle, but there is so much rust inside, the wax can't get in. I did notice, after getting the spool really hot, when it came off, the rust was like powder. I ruined a couple of bearings, but I think I have it figured out now to get the others apart. Chris

Chris,The next time you have a 'stubborn' nut,heat it to cheery red.Imediately douse/immerse in cold water till cold.The sudden contraction will break the rust.You should be able to easily remove it,possibly even with your fingers.Old welder trick.Also called the "screaming bucket" method...One of my favorites.Steve

I thought about that, but wasn't sure if the cast iron would take it or bust.

Direct the heat to the steel nut.That the cast wont get so much heat,it should be ok.If you're real careful,you can 'blow' the nut off with minimal to NO damage to the bolt threads.Done that several times...

I'm looking at one here too, same sort of deal.

Kinda thinking buying a IHC 490 might be an easier route...

Shoup has same parts a lot cheaper than Deere does, if you need any more bearings. I don't care for their online catalog never find what I want, but their paper catalog and their phone service is great.

I didn't call Shoup, but I couldn't find that model listed in there catalog, It's not a regular sealed bearing.
Perhaps I didn't explain my problem well enough. The nuts came off the gangs OK. The cast iron 1/2 spools next to the outer bearings are filled with dirt from being run loose a long time before I bought it. The spools are rusted tight on the shaft as well as some of the bearings. I heated the cast spools hoping they would expand and I would be able to drive them off then. I have 2 of the main gangs apart, 1 main gang back together, 2 of the wing gangs apart and 1 back together. The gang shafts are wore from the blades being loose, so I have welded the groove up and ground them off smooth. Try to get some more done tomorrow night and then work on it Saturday. Chris

I have found on disk spools and axles DO NOT USE ANY spray or lube and they will come apart easier. The rust can come out if you do not spray it down with some oil based lube and make the rust into a paste. Take the axle nut off and then rattle the heck out of it with a BFH and they will come apart. The rust can fall out when it is dry. Spray it down and then you have to fight it apart.

On those bearings They are way cheaper from Shoup. Just call them the on line catalog is a Joke. Just have the JD part number and they can cross it right up for you.
