I have and McCormick No.7, No.9 and a Massey Harris No.33 Enclose Gear Boxes horse mowers. What kind of oil should I use in the gearboxes?

thanks

I seem to remember that Dad used a heavy oil, possibly #90 gear oil. I know that it was too thick for me to use the big old squirt oiler that he kept it in. Just didn't have enough hand strength at my age back then.

i allways used 90-140wt myself,in all those old gearboxes, most of them werent sealed real well,or didnt have much axle seals.

Checked the Instructions manual for McCormick-Deering No. 7 mower.

The topic on [b:654c4848f0]Oiling[/b:654c4848f0] is discussed on page 12.

The manual recommends four quarts S.A.E. 20 oil.

Hope this helps.

In Lynn Millers book, "The Horsedrawn Mower Book", he says "DO NOT USE 90w gear oil. Use 10w foam-depressed hoist oil." The lighter oil reduces gear drag but a tight seal on the pitman shaft is required. Considering the slower speeds and relatively low gear loads on horsedrawn equipment, heavy weight oils are not needed, unless you are trying to compensate for a leaking seal.

And all those seals are easily avaible for the McCormick if you need them, don't know about the Massey. I could go to my Amish friends and get them.
