311 questions

Found what appears to be a nice looking original 311 round nose for sale. Has the engine side panels and sheet metal appears to be nice and straight. Wide front, spin rims. Said to have been tuned up, rebuilt carb, new clutch. Asking price is $3500. Is that about what these go for? My knowledge of JI Case tractors is limited. We do have a "high tin" 730 that I really enjoy running. Does the 311 have live pto? Can you use modern 3 pt. implements? (I assume it has an Eagle hitch.) Do they have the gauge cluster like a 730? Anything in particular I need to check when I go look at it? Thanks for your help.

The price seams a bit steep, New Tires could push it up there. You can use any CatI 3pt. implements. The pto has a hand clutch on the left side, if it is a tripple range 12spd trans. If it is only a straight 4spd there is no live pto. To shift the tripple range lever on the right, note the High is straight up, Direct is straight down, but to get to low range you have to go back to nutral and slide the shift lever sidways to the right and then push it forward. The gears are not in a progression from low range one to high range forth. It takes a while to learn what gear and range combination proceeds the next.

Yes, they do have the gauge cluster. Very expensive to get repaired. Clutch works sort of like a 2-stage foot clutch. The hand clutch stops the tractor forward motion, but the PTO continues to run. You can make most 3-point implements work. Some of the implement mounting pins are too wide and you may have to flip them to the inside. $3,500 seems a little high. Check the brakes. I have a 311 and like it.

Beginning to fully restore a 1956 Case 311 that I remember being delivered to my grandfather when I was 9 years old. We have a lot of play in the steering...too much to be safe. We've started to look for a steering box, but so far no luck. Is packing with grease an option? Or do we need to keep looking for the box itself? Tie rods look okay. Anyone?
