SC Case Valve Lifters

Can the valve lifters on an SC Case be removed from the top of the engine (with the head off)?
I'm trying to clean all the gunk out of the chamber above the lifters, but it's narrow and deep. I thought if I could remove the lifters I could flush / blow the chamber out better, but didn't want to pull a lifter out of its bore, and not be able to get it back it. I don't plan on removing the engine or pulling the camshaft at this time. My service manual dosen't tell me what I need to know. Thanks, Tom

I'm affraid they wont come out unless the cam is removed. Used one of the pushrods to clean mine out Probably a better way to do it though, maybe someone else will have some ideas.

I removed a lot of the gunk out using and oil galley brush, and compressed air, but I was grease from head to to when I was done! If I can remove the lifters, I might use some solvent and the brush again to clean it up better.

The lifters are not coming out. Even though it's an early engine, the lifters have the mushroom or flange on the bottom side. I didn't think they did, but I can feel them. They wouldn't have fit thru the top of the block anyway. Oh well..... spent all day cleaning the inside of the crankcase and pushrod chamber, and it's looking 90% better.
