HELLO ALL-
I HAVE MY GRANDPA"S 1963 SUPER DEXTA AND THE STEERING HAS GOTTEN GRADUALLY WORSE.I KNOW THAT SOMEBODY CAN GIVE ME SOME ADVISE.THANK YOU IN ADVANCE TOMATO FRANK

Hello Frank, In the center of the steering wheel, there is a nut or a cap that holds the steering wheel on. Put a socket on it and unscrew it, and pour some 90 weight gear oil down it. At the bottom of your steering wheel shaft is a housing that has a worm gear in it. That operates your steering. If it is low on oil or if the oil is old and gummy, that could be why it is hard to steer. There is a drain plug on that housing that can be opened and drained. Then you can refill it from the steering wheel. Also, you might take a can of oil and try to oil your tie rods. Or make sure you grease all your grease fittings on your front end. Once you fill your shaft with oil, you will have to drive it and turn it a few times to loosen it up. It should get better after your drive it awhile. Those are really nice little tractors. I owned mine for almost 17 years and I really enjoyed the tractor. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Bob

I tore down, cleaned, lubed and rebuilt the steering gear on my grandfather's Dexta (same steering gear I believe) two weeks ago. It wasn't quite a "proper" rebuild (no replacement parts) and it took a day. Tear down and meticulous cleaning took half of the day. Rebuild took the next half. Packed it with grease instead of filling with gear oil, I wasn't about to count on those old seals holding. I VERY lightly honed the rocker shaft bushings. It was quite nasty inside, rusty and seized at the bushings. I left out all shims when rebuilding and this didn't take out all side and end play. Nevertheless, the tractor turns like I never knew it could. Cultivated an acre for cover crop/ veggies just last week. I took pictures throughout the process should you be interested in seeing them I could pass em along at another time.
