Update: Electrical

Hey guys, did some troubleshooting yesterday on the Power Major. Found a bad wire that was preventing the contact switch from working. Also found a bad wire from the alternator (it's converted) to the voltage regulator. Now the question: Since the charging system has been converted to alternator, should it still be wired into the original voltage regulator? I didn't have time to test to see if it was charging properly. Any input would be appreciated.

I would say that probably not. Most newer alternators (1970s and up) have the voltage regulator built into them. Only the old ones would need an external regulator. But it all depends on the age and design of your alternator. If you could get a model type, you may find more about it. These tractors are designed to be almost 100% mechanical. Some even had a crank handle (but no one could turn it). The only electrical needed is to start the tractor, and lights if running at night. Other than that, it runs completely mechanical. (although most people convert the fuel pump to an electrical one, which is one more thing the battery is needed for) Good luck.
P.S. I converted one of mine to 12 volt alternator with a kit, put in new wires and guages and lights from wallymart, and it cost me very little maybe $150.

This is a one wire GM alternator. Don't know the model number. Just curious, because it seems to be tied into the original wiring harness. Going to do more checking and testing next weekend.

I would run new wires and remove all the original electrical wiring and parts. The one wire GM does not need the external voltage regulator. Sounds like someone pieced it together.
This is a thread from 2005 when I replaced all my electrical. It has worked perfect since then.
