I have an 880 I want to make a 4mph puller out of. I have a 7main 283 diesel sitting here and I have a 4 main 265. Right now I'm only looking to spend around $3000 on the motor. Which motor can I get the most hp/torque out of for the money? Any opinions?

GO with the diesel . You can spend about 1000 on the pump and aboutt 300 on njectors and have plenty of horsepower . Tell them to turn the fuel all it will go on the pump and let her eat . You will have all you need for 4 mph . I have a stock 310 and it has all they want and then some for 4 mph. So the 283 diesel will do it .

Do your rules allow 7 main engines? Is the 283 indirect or direct injected? I would also go with the 7 main engine if rules allow. It has bigger valves, intake, exhaust, and also the roosa master pump which few 4 main engines have.

All depends on rules, but I think the diesel turned up would do just fine,

OR sell the diesel and get a 1100 massy head, bolt that on your 4 main motor, bore block with bigger sleeves/pistons, put as much stroke on crank you can afford... That would give you a good platform to start with...

go with what 6pack said, diesels are expensive a195 waukesha has a good head too. our a 1650 gas is a good head to bolt on 88 block
