farmall m brake seals

I need to replace the brake seals in my M. I already have the tin covers off and the drums off.

What is the procedure to unbolt and remove the casting that holds the seal? Do I need to remove the trans top to do this? Not a big deal if I have to, just looking for some direction from someone who has done this. Thanks.

Do not have to pull the top off. After removing brake hub and the bols on the housing that holds the seal you can use bolts to thread in the holes that are threaded in the housing. As you tighten them it will force the housing to come out of the tranny. Do not try to remove the next housing behind it as damage will occure without removing the bull gear first.

Had a brain fart. Pry out that housing, the housing behind it is the one I was describing that does not need to be removed. Been awhile since I did the last one.

You don't have to remove the casting at all to replace the seal. Drill 2 hole opposite of each other in the outer housing of the seal and use 2 punches to pry the seal out. They also make a seal puller attachment for a slide hammer just for this application. Also get your new seals at a bearing house rather than IH if you can, as they will be about 1/2 price and the same brand.

U can get the seals at napa or car quest, if u take the old seals out 1st they can match them up. Don't take out the bull pinion carrier, u will brake it. I can get u a part number for the seal if u need. I will also walk u threw it if u like just give me a call. 937 726 4121

Timken #417344 just done it this summer. Slow Burn is correct, Do Not take bull pinion carrier out without first removing the bull gear. Seal can easily be changed without doing it.
