I have a 1650 gas that has a knock. it is in the front of the motor I listened to it with a scope so im sure that's where it is. at an idle you cant hear it, from mid throttle to full throttle you can hear it loud and clear. when I listened to it with the scope it was loudest near the valve cover but you could also hear it down to the base but not nearly as loud. any thoughts on what it could be? thanks

I'm not saying this is it but, last year my 1800 gas had a little knock like that. It didn't sound like it was coming from a bearing in the bottom but it wasn't in the head. Turned out to be wrist pin bushings on two rods. From what I've read they can be a common problem as they were brass and after time ware out. Hope it helps

Once while I was green chopping with my 1650 the engine developed a knock/loud ticking. The problem was the thrust washer behind the governor was worn so thin that it was hitting one of the timing gears. Perhaps yours is doing the same thing?

sounds like wrist pin bushings,if it has some hours on it I would definitely check it out. there is an updated wrist pin bushing that is one solid piece that presses into the rod end vs, the originals that were 2 piece, one half in from each side with a gap in the middle for oiling, I have seen it where one side comes out and then the oil supply goes right out and ....rod failure

thanks for all the help guys. i will look into these things. is it possible that i just need a valve adjustment?

Check in carb throat, make sure choke plate has BOTH screws in it. if ones missing theres your knock, screws imbedded in piston top, and rapping on head.
